Updated @ 13:33 July 24: Apple has now started sending out OS X Yosemite beta download links. The beta sign-up site (linked below) is down for maintenance, but it should be back up soon (so you might still have a chance to download OS X 10.10 for free).
Early last month, we got our very first peek at OS X Yosemite at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Just eight weeks later, Apple is now preparing to roll out public access to the latest beta of OS X 10.10. Are you interested in downloading and trying out Apple’s latest and greatest operating system for yourself? Well, you’re in luck because it’s incredibly easy to sign up for the beta — and best of all, the download is completely free.
To sign up for the beta program, you need to head over to Apple’s beta site, and click the blue “Sign Up” button. If you already have an Apple ID, log in on this page. If you don’t, you’ll need to create an account before you proceed. Once you’re logged in, follow the instructions on screen, agree to the terms of service, and then sit tight. The free download links are expected to roll out on July 24.
Keep in mind, this is still unstable software that isn’t fit for everyday use. You should have a complete back-up of your existing OS X installation, and be ready to revert back to OS X Mavericks if something goes wrong. Also, the public beta is still covered by a non-disclosure agreement, so don’t share any specific information regarding the beta. While Apple doesn’t typically go around suing beta testers for posting screenshots, it would be trivial for Cupertino to ban your Apple ID from participating in future betas. Be aware of what you’re agreeing to when you sign up, and don’t get yourself in trouble.

So, what’s new in this latest version of OS X? Simply put, it’s all about consistency this time around. The UI has been largely reworked to fit with the iOS aesthetic introduced in iOS 7. It’s more than just skin-deep, though. Yosemite is designed to work seamlessly with your iOS devices, so you’ll see a huge benefit if you’re using an iPhone or iPad as well.
Apple’s AirDrop file sharing now works across both platforms, and the Handoff feature allows your iOS device to pick up from where your Mac left off. Even better, you can now pair your Mac to your iPhone, and then make and receive phone calls and text messages on whichever machine you’re currently using. Apple is finally implementing its cloud-based Dropbox competitor as well, so your offsite backups will now be baked right into the OS.

Whether you plan on jumping in tomorrow or waiting for the final release this fall, Yosemite seems like yet another solid release from Craig Federighi’s software team. Apple isn’t attempting to reinvent the desktop operating system here, but with an asking price of absolutely nothing, it’s hard to argue with a bunch of new features and a refined user interface.
