Released in late 2012, Mists of Pandaria was another long-awaited expansion to the successful MMORPG World of Warcraft. It followed World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Introducing the Pandaren race and their unique class, the monk, the theme of this expansion was oriental, with Chinese architecture and references being prevalent. Even the new cooking recipes and ingredients were inspired by Oriental cuisine and this feature played a big role, as already in Warcraft III were the Pandarens considered to be good eaters.
For the first and so far only time in World of Warcraft history, Blizzard introduced a race that was faction neutral. Only at level ten do Pandaren characters have to choose between either Alliance or Horde. The monk class is inspired by Eastern martial art, especially Kung Fu. The cuddly panda-like characters were, however, not without their critics, as many players could not take such a race seriously. That did not stop many choosing the monk as their main character, as it was considered strong in all its roles (healing, dealing damage or tanking).
The level cap was increased to 90, up from 80 during Cataclysm, and professions could now be levelled to 600, an increase of 75 points. An eye-catcher to many, some of the new mounts included Yaks and cloud serpents, which are essentially Chinese dragons. As with all expansions, new battlegrounds were introduced - in this case Silvershard Mines - as well as new factions to grind reputation with, including the Klaxxi and Shado-Pan.
Overall a very beautiful continent, Pandaria is on the back of a giant turtle swimming in the sea. Some of the most memorable zones include the Jade Forest and Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Aside from plenty of dungeons and raid as well as PvP possibilities, plenty of daily quests were introduced to keep players occupied. On top of that, Blizzard hid many treasures throughout Pandaria for players to collect (and receive achievements for).
The expansion to follow Mists of Pandaria was Warlords of Draenor, which received a better reception by fans.
